There is something very memorable of my experience not so much marching around the walls but sitting on a yeshiva roof on Tisha B'Av back on a high school summer program. It really was and experience for the senses.

I learned later in life that one of my regrets, having graduated from UCLA in the mid '80s, was that I never studied with Rabbi Chaim Seidler Feller I really did much at Hillel at all during my time on campus. Much of my Jewish involvement took place off campus and I missed out. I'm making up for it these days.

“even when confronted by external enemies, it is the extremism in our own Jewish community that poses the most potent threat to our survival”- not the terrorist organization that praises Hitler, defines Jews as “Kufar” (infidels), and wants a world without Jews… yeah, not buying that, sorry… it’s one thing to criticize st*pid bibi and smotrich. It’s another thing to blame the Jews for hate against them. Very not amazing, and hateful. Thank you.

True peace is not just the absence of conflict but the presence of justice and security for all. Simplifying complex issues into a binary of peace versus zealotry overlooks the nuanced realities many communities face. Constructive zeal, driven by a passion for justice, has historically led to significant advancements in human rights. It’s crucial to differentiate between destructive fanaticism and positive fervor for a just cause. Above all, the lack of genuine commitment to peace from the Palestinian leadership is glaring. They unashamedly avoid any peace efforts that doesn't wipe jews of their only tiny land. The tragic events of October 7 highlight the flaws in your approach. The real peace-loving Israeli communities bordering Gaza were brutally attacked, butchered, and slaughtered. Their goodwill did not protect them against the cunning enemy. While your call for peace is noble, selectively highlighting stories does not reflect the Torah’s true values. The Torah provides many examples of how to deal with enemies who seek our destruction with a strong hand being the right way. If only the world stopped blaming Israel for everything and self-hating Jews like you ceased preaching their misguided views, but instead held Hamas and the corrupt Palestinian leadership accountable for promoting and building all this terror, they would be isolated from the world and forced to stop and both the Jewish and Palestinian people could undoubtedly live in harmony.

This was so encouraging to hear... to know that there are people in the world able to hold the complexities of human motives, fears, histories and context...to go into dire situations humbly but with respect and confidence in people's ability to find right solutions. This is peace work like Gandhi did, like MLK did, and we need to see this so badly. Thank you!!

very subtle propaganda that ignores the real history of the zionist state , and deeper, the fact that the zionist state is itself an idol, ...freedom and justice..justice requires a true narrative and a true view of the siiuation not a bunch of great sounding words

One book for you dear rabbi.....Read: The War of Return by Einat Wilf Einat a lifelong peace activist will explain to you why your point of view is so naive. You seem like a 'nice' person but you lack wisdom. An uninformed American who just wants the kids to get along and things to get back to good for Jews here in the good ol' USA. An American who for decades supported a two state solution with people who yell in your face (louder today than ever) that they want one state from the river to the sea. Decades upon Decades of compromises that resulted in Oct. 7 Rabbi....'river to sea' is not a call of coexistence, not a call of compassion or reason. The poor innocents who have been holding hostages in their homes for 8 months are not looking for a compromise or an end to the war. Today, we must decide that we are not in Israel and should not tell the Israelis what to do to defend their right to exist. Today, we must decide that we no longer listen to people like you who insist that we need to compromise one more time. That this time things will be different.

Rabbi Sharon, A brave sermon with a call to those of us here in the Jewish Diaspora to stand up and support President Biden's plan for a Ceasefire and a path forward. It's a path that brings hostages home and stops the fighting in time to preserve what's left of Hamas. I'm afraid justice is nowhere in this battle of zealots including many many Israelis and Palestinians who have lost their way in this endless bloodletting. It has Iranians and Americans and countless others caught up in the jaws of a War beyond G-d's control. I pray for a road to Peace that everyone can find..

The cynical take on Josephus would be that when he was in that cave of defeated hardliners that he was being a real keen math wiz and a pragmatic survivor among fanatics resolved to die. The Sicarii and the Zealots are DEFINITELY a cautionary tale, I agree. Rabbi Brous seems to have the same beautiful empathy and self-accountability as Senator Bernie Sanders, both with shining souls whom I would follow if they led the way. I'm disgusted with the naysayers in the comment section who rebuff what Rabbi Brous is preaching (right-wingers like Bibi & Trump are why we can't have good things). This one sermon has made a subscriber out of me: Bravo, Rabbi !

One "camp of violent extremists" has one of the world's most powerful militaries, including nuclear weapons, and THE most powerful nation in the world - the US - as its protector, funder and weapons provider. That "camp" is the state of Israel. Rhetorically you set up a false equivalency. Hamas has the Qassam Brigades who live underground and make their own simple but effective explosives and NO air force, no weaponized drones, no medical support.

Burning the fleet, crossing the Rubicon... those were essentially the same pattern. That solution to motivate to a fight works as often as it doesn't. In most armies, the recruits know that they will face death or a fate worse than death if they do not advance. When your enemy specifically wants to wipe you out, only a fool will surrender. That has happened in history too. It did not generally work out too well for those who surrendered. What do you think the Russians would do if the Ukrainians were to surrender?

Steven King wrote a wonderful novel called "Needful Things". A needful thing in the novel is something so coveted that it changes the person coveting it. And since the devil is involved the coveted thing turns out to be worthless. I see Israel as a "needful thing". I see not only the destruction and death on the part of the IDF. I see Israeli people exulting in the cruelty of it. It appears that a nail has become a hammer. And there is not really much to distinguish this hammer from any other hammer of the past.

Zero geopolitical insight. Israel’s war isn’t solely with Hamas but Iran and all its proxies. To adopt Biden’s peace plan would leave Hamas standing, encourage them and give further impetus to Iran, Hezbollah, the Houthis and all the Shiite terror groups in Iraq etc etc. By the way all Israelis know that reaching any agreement with Hamas will not bring all the hostages home. Hamas are vengeful, vindictive and evil to an extreme obviously beyond your LA based understanding.

Heaviness of head is a horse thing. It is the opposite of a stiff neck. You can never ride a horse with a stiff neck because it will not listen to you and you might get seriously injured by being thrown off. It is important to work with a horse on the ground, before riding it, to make sure it will turn its neck when you ask. And a horse with a heavy head is one who will listen to what you say. It keeps its head down and does what it is told. It is not at all trying to make its own way but trying with everything in its heart to live the reality the rider is in charge.

As I said and will repeat: the intentions of Israel's extremists are stated and clear: ethnic cleansing and should that entail violence that would not deter them. But again as I said they are not prevailing and there is strong active and growing resistance from the Israeli people. The ICJ has just said that they did not find that genocide is plausible but that Gazans have a plausible claim to protection from genocide. And the numbers which have fueled the (unplausible) charge of genocide have just been reduced by 50%. I am interested in understanding why only Israel is held culpable in this conflict. And as you rightfully appeal to compassion and the heart I will tell you that every death, shown or not shown, every maimed child is gut and heart wrenching. Not so apparently for Hamas, which have chosen to keep this conflict going and the number of glorious martyrs growing. They are a tyrannical evil for the very people they are supposed to protect. I am very engaged with Palestinians from the West Bank part of Palestine and they know, understand and reject the evil of Hamas. They want their state. So do I They want acknowledgement of their catastrophe and reparations. So do I. And some day reconciliation. But Hamas doesn't offer that path. They offer tyranny and death. I will rest my case
